Canonsburg VFD needs volunteers
Observer-Reporter
Volunteerism is the policy or practice of volunteering one’s time or talents for charitable, educational or other worthwhile activities, especially in one’s community. Volunteering allows people to help others through direct action, but also fosters an incredible sense of community. In fact, commitment of volunteerism has been a hallmark of American culture since the founding of our country. It is what holds the community together.
In 1736, Benjamin Franklin formed the first volunteer fire department. The need of volunteers to help others in their community continues today and is a staple of the American culture. Volunteerism enables people to reach out in their own way to give back to their community. It gives people the chance to work together, yet give of themselves personally for a common good.
The Canonsburg Volunteer Fire Department, which was formed in 1902, is an example of how many fine men and women have given back to their community. The Canonsburg VFD needs local men and women to offer their time and talents to their community through volunteering in the fire service.
Making a commitment to come out and help in a time of need is a big step. It is a commitment that yields many personal rewards to any individual who would give of themselves in this way. It allows residents to form friendships and at the same time, learn new and exciting skills that can be use throughout life and help others in the community. Through the fire service, you will meet many people in the community and learn first-hand how important it is to lend a hand to your neighbor.
Because people are so busy, volunteerism is down. In order to keep community services like the fire department alive, we need to bring volunteerism back. Search deep inside yourself and ask what you can do to help the community, instead of what your community can do for you.
Come down and visit the Fire Department, which has a lot to offer.
The Canonsburg VFD trains every Monday night at 7 p.m.
