Brother bonds strong in McGuffey, Wash High wrestling programs

Completing the McGuffey brotherhood of wrestling we have the Hunters, Seth, Evan and Garrett, who are cousins of Jeremy Hunter, a four-time state champion at McGuffey and former NCAA champ at Penn State.

There are the Breese brothers, Keith whose sons, Steve, Brad and Philip, wrestled at McGuffey. Jeff Breese is a former state champion and current assistant coach at Washington & Jefferson.

There are the Main brothers. Kash Main had two sons, Kirk and Tyler, who wrestled at McGuffey. Jerry “Pudge” Main was the WPIAL champion at 105 pounds in 1976.

There was Richard and Shaun Kelly, and Mike, Jay and Joel McGuier. Joel McGuier was a WPIAL champion who lost in the state finals in 1972 at 138 pounds.

The Pizzi brothers, J.R and and Eric were two competitive wrestlers. John Alexas was a section champion at 126. He is currently the owner of Shorty’s Hot Dogs in Wolfdale. Steve Alexas wrestled at Bentworth and is the owner of Shorty’s in Washington.

At Washington High School, there have been many brother combinations who were been standouts on the wrestling mats. There was Curt and Sam Kerns, and three Cooper brothers, Terry, Michael and Kevin, and the Boardleys, Bill and Dan.

Another of the Prexies trios included Rick, Chuck and Ronnie Zacour. And don’t forget Chuck Martin and his brother Billy, who was a WPIAL champion at 88 pound in 1969. Members of the brotherhood include Bob and Ron Warnick and the Bryants, George “Fuddy” and Mike. George was a WPIAL and state champion in 1971 at 112 pounds wrestled at Pitt.

Curt Ellis won the WPIAL title at 105 in 1977 and earned two trips to the state tournament. His brother, Dean, was a competitive wrestler.

The Prexies had Harry and Stan Mousetis. Harry won a WPIAL championship at 165 in 1942. Four years later, Stan won the WPIAL and state tiles at 133. He went on to coach at Wash High and served as an assistant coach at Pitt. Four of Stan Mousetis’ sons – Mike, Tim, Steve and John – were wrestlers. Mike Mousetis won a WPIAL title in 1969, Tim Mousetis won one in 1974 before losing in the state finals. At the University of Kentucky, Tim Mousetis was an All-American. He also had much success as a coach at Chartiers-Houston and Canon-McMillan.

Dan, Mike and Andrew Mousetis are sons of Tim. Dan was a WPIAL champion at 125 pounds in 200.

There are more combinations to come in the Brotherhood of Wrestling.
