Brotherhood of Waynesburg wrestling continued

3 min read

Completing the Brotherhood of Waynesburg wrestling, we have the Merings: Scott, Tom and Brian.

Other talented wrestlers came in groups of three or more, such as John, Jim, Dave and Harold Barclay and the Stephensons: Jim, Billy Joe, Paul, Bob and Danny.

Greg and Tim Ayersman are the sons of Joe Ayersman, a former head coach of the Raiders. The Murdock family had Rick, Steve and Dale, the latter winning WPIAL championships in 1966 and 1968 at 95 and 112 pounds. Dale is a former head coach at Peters Township, where he coached six Kail brothers.

Last week, I failed to mention Dave Thomas, who won a WPIAL title in 1991, also won WPIAL and state titles in 1989 at 135 pounds.

Don’t forget Bob, Dick and Cary Rush; Ed, Chuck and Doug Shriver; Brian, Bill and Scott Schifko and Jed and Matt Stephenson.

Last, but not least, are the Boudreaus, Tom and Mickey. Mickey was a WPIAL and PIAA champion in 1962.

Claysville is home to the McGuffey Highlanders and that program has produced a number of brothers who wrestled.

One of the more well-known names there is Nicolella: Mark, Jay, Eric and Jeff. Their dad was Joe, who was a head coach at Burgettstown.

The Whipkey family produced Nick, Nate, Derek and Christian; and the Petronka family had Rich, Nick and Vic. Vic wrestled at Wash High.

If the last name was Teagarden, it brings to mind Tom, Chuck and Doug. Tom won WPIAL titles in 1969 and 1970 and earned a state title in 1969. He went on to build a successful program at Bentworth.

The number of Scherichs was three: Matt, Addison and Sam. Matt won a WPIAL title at 112 pounds in 2006.

Other WPIAL champions included Kevin Brown, who won at 105 in 1978. He had a brother John, who wrestled. Ted Guess won his title at 138 in 1979 and his brother is Andy. Tim Queen won the 112-pound championship in 1990 and his brothers is Chris.

If you were looking for a pair, then why not Carl and Fritz Group; Aaron and Tyler Harris; Alex and Ben Dunaway; Chad and Rod Clutter; and Randy and Stacy Phillips?

Who could forget the Beatties: Justin, Chad and Troy; the Knonebergs, Karl and Kurt; or the Johnsons: Jared and Jason?

And I’d be remiss if I left out the McConns: Tom, Joe and Newt; the Farabees: Josh, Jay and Jeremy; and the Kings: Rich, Doug and Chris.
