Nothing tiny about the hospitality in these homes
You’ve probably seen those tiny houses on television, but could you actually live in one?
If that’s too little space to commit to, you can try one out for a night or a week at more than a dozen tiny house hotels across the country. We did just that at Tiny House Siesta which is located on the site of a former RV park less than a mile from Siesta Key Beach on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
The “hotel” is actually a collection of a dozen tiny homes each set on a concrete slab and hooked up with water, electric, plumbing and cable. The custom homes are built sturdily and decorated exquisitely with themes such as the iconic lifeguard stands of Siesta Key Beach.
The idea behind Tiny Siesta is to give visitors a different option for vacation rentals and also to allow folks to try out a tiny home to see if they would like living in one.
Think of it as a cabin with a bit less space and a lot more style.
Each bungalow has its own number – we stayed in the No. 7 Yellow Lighthouse.
I booked through an online hotel site, but the payment and reservation is handled through a smartphone app that you download after you book. The app also sends you the door code to unlock your tiny home. Our unit had a love seat, TV, dining set and two lofts with queen beds (one with steps and the other with a ladder). The bathroom had a full shower and the refrigerator was surprisingly a decent size. The unit was even outfitted with an induction burner cook top complete with pots and pans.
Being in Florida, outdoor living adds to the space here and each unit has a patio with furniture and some even boast tiki bars. The smallest of these units starts at 154 square feet while the largest measures 256 square feet and sleeps six people.
We only had two people and one little dog – pets are welcome for no additional fee. We didn’t feel any more confined than you do in a regular hotel room – plus we had a kitchen at our disposal.
Prices for this tiny home experience range from $139-199 per night. Tiny House Siesta is located at 6600 Avenue A, Sarasota, FL.
