Rotary honors students with scholarships, awards

The Rotary Club of Washington recently awarded seven academic awards and three community service awards to area students at its annual Student Awards Luncheon. All students received $1,000 as part of the recognition.

Winners were:

• Nathan Michaux, the Dr. David K. Scarborough/Rotary Academic Achievement Award. Michaux, son of Bruce and Lisa Michaux, is a recemt graduate of Washington & Jefferson College and will attend law school at the College of William & Mary.

• Shane Coffield, the Dr. Douglas Masciola/Rotary Academic Achievement Award, Coffield, son of Kurt and Deirdre Coffield, is a graduate of Trinity High School and plans to attend the University of Chicago, where he will study astrophysics.

• Brennon Wood, the Rotary Academic Award from Avella Junior/Senior High School. Wood, son of Betsy and Kerry Kennedy, plans to study computer science at Waynesburg University.

• Aidan Walsh, the Rotary Academic Award from Burgettstown Junior/Senior High School. Walsh, son of Paul and Teresa Walsh, will attend the University of Pittsburgh to study business.

• Rebekah Welesko, the Rotary Academic Award from Fort Cherry High School. Welesko, daughter of Kenneth and Deborah Welesko, plans to attend Carnegie Mellon University.

• Drevin Galentine, the Rotary Academic Award from McGuffey High School. Galentine, son of Denny and Joi Galentine, plans to study mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.

• Kristen Wilson, the Rotary Academic Award from Washington High School. Wilson, daughter of Keith and Michele Wilson, plans to attend Waynesburg University to study secondary education-chemistry.

• Receiving the Clyde J. Tracanna/Washington Rotary Club Educational & Vocational Fund Scholarship administered by the Washington County Community Foundation were Kelly McCosby of McGuffey, Robin Crowley of Trinity and Samuel Wicker of Washington. The primary criterion for this scholarship is community service.

McCosby, daughter of John and Diana McCosby, plans to attend Grove City College to study exercise science. She was captain of the rifle and cross-country teams and volunteered with church mission trips and at the Oglebay Zoo.

Crowley, daughter of Robert and Connie Crowley, plans to attend Marietta College to study biology. She was a member of the gifted program, orchestra and chemistry club in addition to being an active volunteer for Trinity Middle/High School and Citizens Library.

Wicker, son of Robert and Karen Wicker, plans to attend Dickinson College to study education. He was president of the National Honor Society, as well as a member of the marching, steel drum and jazz bands and the soccer team. He also earned his Eagle Scout Award.
