McMurray native to lead mission in Ecuador

2 min read

Dr. Martin Johns of Jefferson Hills will serve as team leader for a mission trip to Ecuador in March with Volunteers in Medical Missions.

Johns, a native of McMurray, is the associate residency director for the Family Medicine Residency of UPMC McKeesport. He has previously been a team member with VIMM in Guatemala and has served as team leader several times in Peru and, most recently, in Kenya.

“I have been going on mission trips with VIMM since 2006, but this is my first trip to Ecuador,” Johns said. “It is exciting to help VIMM return to a mission site where we have been actively involved for several years.”

Based in Seneca, S.C., VIMM is a no-profit, interdenominational organization that sends short-term mission teams to minister in medically deprived areas of the world. Since 1986, physicians, medical support staff and nonmedical personnel have provided medical care in Third World countries to enhance and develop the missionary outreaches of local churches in rural villages.

The mission trip to Ecuador is March 15-21. Medical providers, pharmacists, nurses and nonmedical personnel are needed to form a team of about 15 members. Trip applications can be submitted online. For more information, visit www.vimm.org or call 800-615-8695.
