SAR to celebrate 125th anniversary
Sons of the American Revolution will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its founding on April 30.
On July 4, 1876, a group of men in California, who were descendants of the patriots involved in the American Revolution, formed an organization called the Sons of Revolutionary Sires. Its objective was to have a fraternal and civic society composed of members of lineal descendants of those who pledged their lives in the Revolutionary War.
From the sires organization grew the Sons of the American Revolution, which was organized on April 30, 1889. Today, the organization has more than 32,000 members in the United States, as well as eight international societies. Locally, there are chapters in Washington and Greene counties.
The George Washington Chapter, the second oldest chapter in Pennsylvania, serves Washington County, and the Fort Jackson Chapter meets in Waynesburg. Both chapters draw their members from the tri-state area. SAR is open to any male 18 or older who can trace his lineage to an individual who fought in or supported the American Revolution.
