Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday and Pancake Day are all names that have been applied to the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Christian season of fasting and prayer called Lent.

Two area churches, First United Methodist in Washington and Center United Presbyterian in Midway, will mark the occasion by hosting specials meals.

Fat Tuesday refers to the common Christian tradition of eating special rich foods before the fasting season. Shrove means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of confession and doing penance.

Shrove Tuesday historically was the last day before Lent, and is noted in early histories dating to 1000 AD.

In England, Ireland and in the United States, Shrove Tuesday is frequently referred to as “Pancake Day.” It is customary to eat pancakes as a last feast before the ritual fasting during Lent.

First United Methodist Church of Washington, 29 N. College St., will recognize the traditional day by holding a Pancake Day dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. March 4.

At Center United Presbyterian Church, 110 Washington Ave., the Midway Mariners will host their annual Shrove Tuesday dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. March 4. The dinner will include pancakes, sausage, mush, fruit and cookies.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12. Reservations are required by calling 724-796-3351 or 724-678-6976. Payment for reserved tickets will be accepted at the door.
