Washington Health System Sports Medicine recently honored 10 student-athletes and five coaches of the month from Fort Cherry, Trinity and Washington high schools at its first Sports Medicine Banquet at the Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center. Guest speaker was Mel Blount. In addition, Olivia Gray of Trinity was named Female Student-Athlete of the Year; Davy Oliverio of Washington was named Male Student-Athlete of the Year; and Teresa Booker, the track and volleyball coach at Washington, was named Coach of the Year. Gray is a junior fast-pitch softball player, and she ranks in the top 25 of her class with a grade-point average of 4.1. She also participates in numerous extra-curricular activities. She recently was recognized as one of the top 100 softball players in the country in the Class of 2015 by Student Sports. Oliverio, who recently graduated seventh in his class with a grade-point average of 3.97, played tennis and soccer. He played both sports for the first time his senior year and became the tennis team’s No. 2 singles player, and his doubles team qualified for the WPIAL championships. Oliverio was one of only two seniors at Wash High who took core classes at the AP/college level. Booker is actively involved in programs involving students in learning support, serving as the coordinator for afterschool/summer school programs, Olweus Bully Prevention, work release and transition and Peer Mediation. She also is a team leader/mentor for new teachers. She guided the boys and girls track teams to undefeated section championships this year.
