Hunter – 100 years
Eleanor Hunter of Washington celebrated her 100th birthday with a luncheon for friends and family Oct. 18 at Grove United Presbyterian Church.
She was born October 21, 1915, in Short Creek, W.Va.
On May 29, 1937, she married Ralph Hunter. They were married for 67 years until he died in 2004.
She has three children, Angela of Avella, Elizabeth Schultz of Salem, Wis., and Duane of Mechanicsville, Va.
She has five grandchildren.
After retiring from teaching math at Washington High School in 1981, Mrs. Hunter took up quilting. She has made more than 50 handmade pieces, most of which have been given to her children and grandchildren and a few have been given as raffle prizes for the grange. She spent several years making crafts at Southminster Place, where she made more than 100 teddy bears for patients.
She also volunteered for the American Red Cross for many years. In 1991, Mrs. Hunter was awarded the Washington Senior Care Auxilian of the year. She was a member of the Eastern Star and a 50-year member of the grange. She is an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Grove United Presbyterian Church, where she served as Sunday school treasurer for many years. She also is a member of its Kitchen Band.
