AAUW book sale provides scholarships
The 48th annual Book Sale of the American Association of University Women, Washington branch, will be held Thursday and Friday during operating hours at Washington Crown Center and until 5 p.m. Saturday.
Donations of new and “pre-owned” books will be accepted at the book sale site at the mall after 6 p.m. today.
The specially priced “Bag Full of Books Sale” will be held early Saturday afternoon.
The book sale has generated nearly $62,000 for the organization’s “Returning Woman Scholarship,” which is awarded to women who have either returned or plan to return to college full time to finish a bachelor’s or equivalent degree program.
Scholarship amounts depend on the strength of the student’s application and available funds. Scholarship applicants must be residents of Washington County, be at or beyond the 30-credit level with at least a 3.0 grade-point average and demonstrate financial need.
Applicants must be in the process of applying to the college of her choice, or have already been accepted or currently enrolled. Nurses pursuing a college degree must already be a registered nurse.
Based on the number and quality of applications submitted, candidates may be asked to participate in an interview with the scholarship committee. To obtain an application, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to “Returning Woman Scholarship,” AAUW-Washington, c/o scholarship chair, 3451 Route 40, Washington, PA 15301, or request an application by emailed by contacting katsabol@comcast.net. Applications are reviewed on a periodic, rolling basis; there is no deadline to apply. However, applications should be received at least 60 days before intended enrollment to ensure proper time for review and disbursement of the scholarship.
Youth groups looking for a community service project or service hours are needed to help set up the book sale. To schedule volunteer hours or for more information, call book sale coordinators Betty Bull at 724-222-9114 or Elsie Knappenberger at 724-223-8457.
