Penn State Extension – Washington County 4-H program is offering a series of workshops to introduce a few of the projects available in the 4-H program. All programs are open to 8- to 18-year-olds, and will be held at Courthouse Square, room 601, Washington.

The workshop series are:

Health Rocks – Healthy Choices, 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 3-5. The program aims to reduce youth smoking and tobacco use. It is designed to:

• Help youth build life skills that lead to healthy lifestyle choices with special emphasis on youth smoking and tobacco use prevention.

• Help youth understand influences and health consequences of tobacco, drug and alcohol use to make healthy choices.

• Engage youth and adults in a partnership to develop and implement community strategies that promote healthy lifestyle choices.

• Build positive, enduring relationships with youth involved as full partners through widely varying “communities of interest” to address youth risk behaviors.

Junk Drawer Robotic, 6 to 8p.m. Feb. 7-9. With Junk Drawer Robotics, youth are challenged to build robots from everyday items. No computers will be required or used in the series.

A robotics notebook will be used to record students’ learning experiences. Youth will explore and learn about designs, three-dimensional space and hands-on learning. This is an introduction to robotic form and function, scientific habits of mind and engineering design.

Acres of Adventures, 6 to 8 p.m. March 14-16. This project includes learn-by-doing agriculture activities with two levels of curriculum. Activities include food science experiences and mystery games, with agriculture products such as seeds, fruits, candy and vegetables.

Adventures with Your Camera, 6 to 8 p.m. May 2-4. This two-skill-level project familiarizes youth with camera parts and functions and types of film and cameras. The workshop will teach youth how to take photos of a variety of subjects, and how to use different angles and lighting.

Cost is $5 for each workshop series. Advance registration is required by calling 724-228-6881. Workshops will be canceled if fewer than 10 people do not register. Project books will be provided for each workshop project series.

Students must attend all three nights in one project area to enter their 4-H project in the fair. A flat fee for 4-H membership is $20. Each workshop project series includes a project book, supplies and a light snack.
