Adult day care just what doctor ordered
CANONSBURG – Adolph Bell and Lillian Longevitsh spend many of their weekdays at Quality Family Care in Canonsburg, and they love every minute of it.
And even though Adolph is closing in on 100 and Lillian on 101, both are still feisty and actively participate in daily activities at the adult day care.
“Adolph may take a nap for a half hour, but, oh yeah, they are both active,” said Darlah Gazvoda, owner/director of Quality Family Care. “Both give their children a run for their money.”
Adolph, who doesn’t like to do much at home, is quite the opposite at Quality Family Care, as is Lillian.
“They buddy up with somebody else,” Gazvoda said. “They are different around people here than they are at home. I’m just amazed to see how active they are. They share so much with us.”
Adolph was born Jan. 8, 1916. He lives with his son, Paul Bell, and started coming to Quality Family Care on weekdays about a year ago.
“The best place to come is right here,” said Adolph, who, in his younger days, was an avid gardener and enjoyed walking and swimming in the creek. “I like the people. They’re all good people.”
He also enjoys sharing stories about his father, who was a shoemaker in Strabane. At one time, Adolph helped his father in his cobbler’s shop.
“I got tired of it,” Adolph said, “and walked away.”
Lillian was born Jan. 13, 1915. She lives with her son, Joseph Noble, and started coming to adult day care about 18 months ago. She joins Adolph and the rest of the clients three days a week.
“It takes me away from the hustle and bustle of ordinary living,” she said. “If it takes me away from the ordinary, I love it.”
Lillian is meticulous about her appearance, too. Her hair is neatly coiffed, her nails are done to perfection, and there is nary a wrinkle on her soft, smooth face. Her secret, she said, is Pond’s cream, which she has used every day of her life for as long as she can remember.
Her favorite activity at Quality Family Care is bingo.
“Everybody is so nice. It’s a wonderful institution,” Lillian said. “We’re all together here, and I can’t wait to come the next day. “For a long time, I was stuck at home, and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, how am I going to get through the day.’ I come here… They’re right there for you. It’s wonderful. I’m real happy.”
Quality Family Care celebrated their birthdays early – on Dec. 2 – while “we still had some sunshine,” Gazvoda said.
And both Adolph and Lillian appreciated the party.
“I got this far in life,” she said. “I feel fortunate.”
“I’m not old, but I’m not young either,” Adolph said. “I’m still here. God bless me.”
