Giant Oaks Garden Club sponsors flower show
A flower show highlighting the Pittsburgh bicentennial and all things unique to Pittsburgh will begin at 10 a.m. July 23 and 24 at the Galleria in Mt. Lebanon.
The free show is sponsored by the Giant Oaks Garden Club of McMurray, and will feature several floral design categories:
• Alfresco table designs celebrating the city’s love of tailgating;
• Swags and wreaths highlighting the diversity of Pittsburgh’s ethnic neighborhoods;
• Creative exhibits that pay tribute to Pittsburgh’s championship sports teams and the city colors of black and gold;
• From Steeples to Soup Cans, with designers interpreting the arts and culture of Pittsburgh;
• “An Homage To ‘Pittsburghese,'” which will pay homage to Pittsburghese with photos of annuals and perennials (It’s A ‘Burgh Thing); deck and patio containers (Containers N’at); fruits, vegetables, farms and gardens (Not From Dahntahn); and Pixburgh Landscapes , photographs of regional and Pittsburgh gardens, landscapes or scenes.
Seventy five horticulture classes will be featured in sections of annuals, perennials, evergreens, herbs, roses, ornamental grasses, shrubs and container grown plants. There also is a Club Challenge – a gold marigold grown in a pot decorated with a Pittsburgh theme.
There also will be an educational division and youth division, with exhibits on community outreach, nature’s harvest in Pittsburgh parks and gardening with Pennsylvania native plants. Youth exhibits will focus on bees.
Two free classes will be held July 23. Foraging Pittsburgh will present at 1 p.m. how to locate, identify and sustainably harvest the wild edible plants and mushrooms of Pennsylvania, and a workshop at 2:30 p.m. will teach participants how to prepare a Pittsburgh-themed wreath for the holidays.
