Peters Township youngsters have a turkey of a time
Take a pine cone, feathers, some cloth, a few pieces of pipe cleaner and googly eyes. Add Elmer’s glue. And have a happy Thanksgiving!
Some local holiday celebrations will have handmade pine cone turkeys for centerpieces, thanks to the craft portion of Thursday’s Turkey Time program for preschoolers at Peters Township Recreation Center.
Recreation supervisor Lisa Taylor did her usual stellar job in leading youngsters through late-November activities, from drawing “I am thankful for …” pictures to listening to her tell the tale of four noisy turkeys in the children’s book “Gobble-Gobble-Crash!”
At the start of the program, she asked, “What can you tell me about Thanksgiving?”
One answer revealed an affinity for Easter:
“Chocolate!”
Another revealed knowledge about Thanksgiving’s meaning:
“We share.”
And a third revealed a head for history:
“The pilgrims came over.”
According to tradition, they proceeded to share a feast with the Native Americans they encountered, and we’ll leave the children with the lasting image of everyone getting along well.
The youngsters got along well as they assembled their crafty turkeys, with a little help from the adults in the audience, in plenty of time for their own Thanksgiving feasts and family customs.
“We share food and football,” Taylor told the kids. “That’s what happens in our house.”
