Greene Humane Society to hold Doggie Pool Party
Dogs in bikinis and little Speedos, lounging at poolside.
This could be the scene next week at the Humane Society of Greene County’s annual “Dog Gone Pool Party.”
The party will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Carmichaels Pool at Wana B Park. It is then, after closing for the season, that the pool will be open for dogs to swim and cool off during what is the dog days of summer.
The humane society has held the event since 2006 to help raise money for its shelter. For a donation to the society, owners can let their dogs use the pool, and, if they wish, jump in themselves.
The event is not a big fundraiser for the humane society, said Jane Gapen, society executive director.
“It’s more something for the community,” she said. “It’s for fun.”
She said it’s fun to watch dogs jump in the pool – with or without their owners – or parade around sporting swimwear.
“If you have never been there, it’s hysterical,” Gapen said.
The event usually draws between 40 and 50 dogs, although two years ago, more than 90 dogs were in attendance. People who have adopted pets from the society as far away as Pittsburgh have attended the event, Gapen said.
Many people bring their whole families, and spectators also are usually in abundance.
“It’s a family event and a fun day for all dog lovers in the community,” Gapen said. Children especially enjoy seeing dogs dressed for the occasion.
The pool party again is sponsored by Watters Pools of Carmichaels in memory of Kenny Denny. Watters is a supporter of the humane society. Denny was one of the business’ longtime employees and an animal lover. He died in February 2015.
As always, the party will include awards and prizes. Every dog also will receive a treat bag.
Dogs must arrive on a leash and show documentation of updated vaccinations. Children younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
