Jefferson teen named Greene Co. fair queen
WAYNESBURG – Seventeen-year-old Julie Policz of Jefferson has attended the Greene County Fair since she was a child, and for as long as she can remember, she had always wanted to be the fair queen.
Policz, daughter of Wyatt and Zora Policz, got her wish Sunday evening when she was named the 2017 Greene County Fair queen.
Policz will reign over this year’s fair, which opened Sunday, and will later represent the Greene County Fair in the Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Pageant.
“I’ve always wanted to do this since I was little,” Policz said, as she stood in the show ring of the livestock building Monday morning, handing out ribbons during the goat show. “I have always wanted to represent Greene County.”
Policz has been involved in 4-H for the last nine years and raises cattle, sheep, goats and rabbits. This week, she will be showing her animals in the fair’s market steer, market lamb and breeding sheep competitions.
Policz has been successful in those endeavors in the past, showing the grand champion market steer at the fair in both 2014 and 2015.
Having grown up on a farm, Policz has always been around animals. It is the animals, she said, that are the main attractions for her at the fair.
“I enjoy all the fun, and I always enjoy seeing all the animals,” she said, adding that she prefers the agricultural aspect of the county fair over the amusements or other entertainment.
Policz will be a senior this year at Jefferson-Morgan High School. She said that after graduation, she plans to attend Penn State University and major in agriculture. She eventually wants to own a ranch out West.
“I’ve always wanted to live out West and have a big ranch and breed cattle,” she said.
The Greene County Fair runs through Saturday.
