Local counties get educational grants
Two grants totaling more than $700,000 will help improve learning opportunities for young people in Washington and Greene counties.
Intermediate Unit 1 in Washington County and the East End United Community Center in Greene County each received grants in the latest round of funding from the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant program.
The CCLC program, which is administered by the state Department of Education, was designed to provide additional academic programs outside of normal school hours to help students in high-poverty and struggling school districts.
East End United Community Center was awarded a $307,252 grant for its 21st Century after-school program offered at the center in Uniontown and in the Central Greene School District.
EEUCC’s program helps kindergartners through sixth-graders meet state standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math, and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
Intermediate Unit 1, headquartered in Coal Center, also was awarded a $400,000 grant for the after-school programs it offers in Greene, Washington and Fayette counties.
