John and Susan Gideon Lawrence of Carmichaels celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary Aug. 6 with family and friends at Deep Creek Lake, Md. They spent the day cruising the lake on a pontoon boat, then dined at Perkins Restaurant.

Their children are J.P. (Jessica) Lawrence of Carmichaels, Ben (fiance Jenn Graham) Lawrence of Loch Lynn, Md.; Katrina (Chris) Rombold of Pittsburgh; Caitlin Lawrence of Carmichaels; and the late Jennifer Marie Lawrence.

They have one granddaughter, Morgan Nicole Lawrence.

Mr. Lawrence was a mechanic at Cumberland Coal Mine for 35 years. For the past five years, he has worked as the central control operator at the prep plant for Contura Energy, which now owns the Cumberland mine.

Mrs. Lawrence previously taught at Nemacolin, Central and Crucible elementary schools, was a substitute teacher and taught after-school and summer school at Carmichaels Elementary School. She recently retired as a kindergarten teacher from the Carmichaels Area School District.

Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence were merit badge counselors and Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Girl Scout leaders for 25 years. They are members of St. Hugh’s Catholic Church in Carmichaels.

The couple enjoy spending time with their family and friends, listening to music, antiques and yard sales and swimming.
