South Fayette teacher honored
Chevron and the Steelers have selected South Fayette Elementary School STEAM teacher Melissa Unger as winner of the 2017 “Leaders in the Classroom” program, which recognizes area teachers who demonstrate “exemplary leadership and instructional skills.” Unger, who was nominated by Superintendent Dr. Bille Rondinelli for implementing STEAM curriculum for grades K-2, received a certificate and $1,000 grant for additional school supplies. She will also be recognized on the field during the Steelers-Patriots game Dec. 17 at Heinz Field and have the opportunity to participate in a VIP sideline experience. Representatives from Chevron presented Unger with a ceremonial check during an assembly at the elementary school. The event was a surprise for Unger, who said she became suspicious when a group of young students scolded her for being late to the assembly while escorting her into the room. Unger explained how she challenges students to think innovatively in her Learning Lab classroom. “We use basic supplies – tin foil, paper towel rolls, newspapers – to make inventions. We discuss the design process and how to make prototypes. We also do a lot with computer programming and the basics of robotics. Most importantly, students learn how to problem solve when they make mistakes or discover their designs don’t work the way they’re supposed to. They figure out a way to fix it themselves.” Pictured, from left, are Rondinelli, Unger and Chevron representative Lee Ann Wainwright.
