Transitional Paths to Independent Living (TRPIL) recently announced that Brook Ward, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Washington Health System, is a new member of its board.

TRPIL serves people with disabilities throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania through various programs such as personal attendant services, nursing home transitions, home modifications and assistive technology.

Last year, more than 3,000 people were served.

“Mr. Ward will lend his expertise in governance to our organization that he has so strongly developed over the years,” said Kathleen Kleinmann, TRPIL’s chief executive officer. “He will be a powerful addition.”

Ward currently oversees all operations for Washington Health System, including patient care services, ancillary services, facility maintenance, facility planning, information systems, human resources and regulatory affairs, as well as the hospital’s educational programs and service excellence initiatives.

Coming to the Washington Health System in 2010, Ward left his position as vice president of Clinical and Ambulatory Services at Bronson Healthcare Group (Bronson Methodist Hospital) in Kalamazoo, Mich.

He began his healthcare career as a radiology technologist, and then became a business analyst, diagnostic manager, director of radiology and executive director of clinical and ambulatory services.

Ward has extensive experience with improving quality of care, process and operations improvement, physician relations, patient satisfaction/service excellence and organizational growth. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and is a Fellow of The Advisory Board Company agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Ward is deeply involved with the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, which recognizes national organizations in the business, health care, education and nonprofit sectors for performance excellence. The Baldridge Award is the only formal recognition of the performance excellence of both public and private organizations given by the President of the United States.

He is also a photographer and travels extensively. Ward has taken hundreds of pictures at TRPIL’s future headquarters and community center at 42 West Maiden Street, Washington – a former YWCA Building. A firefighter in the U.S. Air Force, Ward worked in hazardous environments during Desert Storm deployment from July 1989 to November 1992. He operated fire alarm communications and performed operator maintenance on fire equipment and vehicles.

His education includes Ferris State University and Grand Valley State University.

Ward said he believes in TRPIL’s mission to help individuals in Southwestern Pennsylvania obtain the skills, knowledge, motivations and opportunities to become self-sufficient and independent.
