The annual Washington County FFA Floriculture Contest was held Nov. 17 at McGuffey High School, including individual and team competitions.

Ten teams of four from Avella, Fort Cherry, McGuffey and Trinity FFA chapters competed. Members were challenged to create floral arrangements for a sweet 16 birthday party, including a long centerpiece, round centerpiece, corsage for the birthday girl and a cake top. The participants were able to make the floral decorations using various cut flowers and all under a strict budget and time constraint.

In the individual competition, the members were given a written-knowledge test of flower identification, floral tool identification and designing a get-well arrangement using fall flowers.

The contest helps to introduce the students to a career in the floral industry.
