The Meadows Racetrack & Casino is throwing a party May 6 in the Meadows Event Center to celebrate the running of the 143rd Kentucky Derby.

There will be live music, live harness racing, food, the annual hat contest and the race shown on one of the Pittsburgh area’s largest outdoor screens.

Wagering for Churchill Downs’ May 6 race card will begin at 9 a.m., when The Meadows’ Racebook opens. Post time for live harness racing at The Meadows is 11:25 a.m.

Guests also can pre-wager for Churchill Downs’ May 6 race card, including the Kentucky Derby, as early as 9:30 a.m. Friday in The Meadows’ Racebook.

“I might be Kentucky born and raised, but we know how to throw the biggest Derby party in Pittsburgh,” said Rod Centers, The Meadows’ vice president and general manager. “We’ll be cutting to Churchill Downs off and on all day between races and staying there until the Derby, as soon as our last live race ends.”

Guests can begin registering for The Meadows’ annual hat contest by noon May 6. Preliminary rounds will be held at 2, 2:30 and 3 p.m., with the final round starting at 4:30.

“I’ll expect to see a lot of big fancy hats, pastel suits and bow ties,” Centers said. “Watching everyone get caught up in the excitement of cheering on their favorite horses makes this horse racing’s most exciting day of the year.”

The Coors Light Party featuring live music from the Davisson Brothers will begin at 3 p.m., while NoMaD will perform live at 3 p.m. at The Meadows Harmar, an off-track betting facility in Harmar Township. A Pens Watch Party also will be held.
