Veterans Day events
The following events will be held in honor of Veterans Day:
Friday
City Mission, 84 W. Wheeling St., Washington, will honor veteran residents during a service at 12:30 p.m. in the City Mission chapel. All veterans will be recognized for their military service by staff and other residents. The community is invited to attend.
Washington High School students and the Washington community will have the opportunity to honor all veterans at their annual Veterans Day program at 2 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium.
The Carmichaels VFW Post 3491 will host a birthday party at 7 p.m. at its location at 500 W. George St., Carmichaels. Marines and Navy veterans are invited to attend the celebration. For information, call 724-852-5275.
Saturday
Members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 902 will be on the streets in Houston for a “Poppy” roadblock. Members will be accepting donations for bright red flowers that are made by veterans with disabilities, and all donations are used exclusively to assist and support our nation’s veterans. Unit 902 has used Poppy donations to purchase over 3,400 custom wheelchair bags and walker totes for disabled veterans in Pittsburgh hospitals over the past 17 years. Rain date is Nov. 18.
Applebee’s restaurants throughout Pennsylvania and West Virginia will celebrate the 10th anniversary of honoring America’s veterans and active-duty military by offering them a free meal on Veterans Day.
Quaker Steak & Lube is recognizing all military veteran and active-duty service members by offering free or discounted meals on Veterans Day at participating locations. Guests can contact their local Quaker Steak & Lube for information on the offers available in their area.
Local McDonald’s owner/operator Ron Galiano will offer free breakfast to veterans and active duty military from 7 to 10:30 a.m. at any of Galiano’s restaurant locations – Bobby Vinton Blvd., Canonsburg; Meadowlands Blvd., Washington; Main Street, Burgettstown; Washington Road, McMurray; Steubenville Pike, Robinson Township; Davis Drive and Summit Park Drive, North Fayette; Gracy Center Way, Moon Township; Three Springs Drive, Weirton, W.Va.; and Lisbon St., Wellsville, Ohio. Proper identification is required. Guests should bring a military ID card, DD-214 form, Veterans Organization card, or a photograph of themselves in uniform.
Line-up starts at 8:30 a.m. for the Greene County Veterans Day parade, Waynesburg, at the First Baptist Church parking lot on West Street. The parade steps off at 9:30 a.m. and runs High Street towards Morgan Street. Veterans and others participating in the courthouse parade can join in at Belko’s parking lot and the PNC parking lot. Those participating in the parade will turn left onto Church Street, go behind the courthouse and line up on Washington Street. All other participants are to proceed to Morgan Street, take a left and cross Greene Street and head to 455 E. Lincoln St. The parade will proceed down High Street to the Greene County Courthouse. The parade marshal is World War II veteran Ralph Conklin, 93, who served on the USS Kenneth M. Willett DE 354 from 1944 to 1946. A program will take place on the courthouse steps after the parade. Participants include James L. Farrell Post 330 American Legion and the Waynesburg VFW Post 4793 as the honor guard will conduct a 21-gun salute. After the program, food and refreshments will be provided by Waynesburg VFW Auxiliary Post 4793 at 455 Lincoln St. for veterans and the public. The Filer-Sadlek American Legion Post 954 in Jefferson will hold its annual Veterans Day parade. Participants will line up at the Jefferson fire hall. Those that cannot march up the hill can ride or assemble at the Methodist Church parking lot/senior center. The parade is set to start around 10:45 a.m. and will finish in front of the American Legion at approximately 11 a.m., where the honor guard will conduct a 21-gun salute. The parade includes the Jefferson-Morgan Junior-Senior High School Band, the West Greene High School Band and the James D. Randolph Kiltie Band. After the parade, there will be a program at Jefferson-Morgan Junior-Senior High School, set to start between 11:30 a.m. and noon in the Stanley Fowler auditorium. The program speaker will be Sarah A. Smith, a U.S. Navy veteran, E-4 and Veterans Director and VSO for Greene County. Following the program, Post 954 will have Post Everlasting Ceremony to memorialize 11 members of Post 954 who have passed away since Nov. 11, 2016. It will be directed by adjutant Thomas Shumaker. Hickory Lions Club will sponsor its Ninth Annual Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. at Allison Memorial auditorium, Mount Pleasant Township Community Center, 20 Wabash Ave., Hickory. In a roll-call ceremony, 29 veterans from Mount Pleasant Township, who died while in the service of their country, will be remembered by a family member, friend or a Lions Club member. All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will follow in the Rainbow Room.
Carmichaels American Legion Post 400 will hold a service at 11 a.m. The program will start with the 21-gun salute, then will continue inside the legion at 205 E. George St., Carmichaels, with the Legion Band performing a variety of songs. Commander William Ross will present the MIA and POW table. State Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson, is scheduled to speak. The Fort Pitt Museum will present living history demonstrations in Point State Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m as part of the Steel City Salutes the Troops event, which will commence following the Veteran’s Day Parade. Re-enactors will present military drills through the ages, demonstrating how soldiers marched in formation, fired muskets, and played military music in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The Veterans Day living history demonstrations are free and open to the public.
Tanger Outlets, 2200 Tanger Boulevard, Washington, will observe a moment of silence at 11:11 a.m. The outlets are partnering with VFW Post 927 to honor veteran Jim Armstrong for his service with a special Hero Care Package. A mural created to honor veterans in the community will be unveiled, and a Hero Celebration at the flag pole with a flag-raising ceremony will be followed by refreshments and treats. At noon, local veterans and Senator John Heinz History Center visitors will gather in the History Center’s Great Hall in Pittsburgh for a patriotic flag ceremony. The ceremony will include the unfurling of a 36-foot American flag, the singing of the National Anthem, a moment of silence for those who have served our country and the ceremonial folding of the flag. The event is included in regular museum admission.
A Veterans Day service will be held at 2 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Site, Cedar Grove Road, Eldersville, rain or shine. Guests should bring a chair. Pastor Joel Peterson from United Methodist Church will be present to lead the opening and closing prayers. For information, call 724-947-9782.
New Hope Presbyterian Church ECO will host a Veterans Day Spaghetti Dinner from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Vets eat free. Patriotic concert with music by Circle of Faith at 7 p.m.
Heaven Bound Ministries will present a “Musical Tribute to Veterans” at 6 p.m. at Emmanuel U.P. Church, 480 Route 519, Eighty Four. Admission is free, light refreshments to follow. For information, call 724-222-7488.
An annual dinner to honor veterans will be held in Laboratory Presbyterian Church’s fellowship hall, starting at 5:30 p.m. Music will be provided by Christian singer Vicky Andreis. Tickets are $10 for adults, $4 for children 4-10, and free for veterans and children younger than 4. Proceeds benefit Pine Springs Camp. Call 724-579-9650 for information.
A Veterans Day fundraising event will be held at SNPJ Lodge, 540 Third Ave., Bridgeville. Doors open 6:30 p.m., followed by the show and dancing to the Fabulous Gemtones at 7:15. First United Methodist Church, 161 W. Pike St., Canonsburg, will hold their 15th annual program honoring veterans and first responders at 7 p.m. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Sally Mounts, who is spearheading the Patriot House program, which will provide housing and services to homeless veterans, will be the keynote speaker. For information, call 724-745-5771.
Sunday
At Abundant Life Baptist Church, 269 Cameron Road, Washington, worship service with special recognition of all veterans begins at 10:45 a.m.
At Church of the Covenant, 267 E. Beau St., Washington, there will be a Service of Appreciation and Remembrance for military and first responders at the 11 a.m. service featuring a special procession, presentation of our nation’s colors and special music by the West Virginia Brass Quintet, the Covenant Choir, the Jubilate Ringers and the Crystal Bells.
At Clarksville Christian Church Disciples of Christ, 330 Market St., Sunday worship service begins at 10:30 a.m. with a presentation to all veterans by veteran Tom Shumaker.
At Claysville United Methodist Church, 1279 Route 40 West, worship begins at 11 a.m. Veterans recognized during service. Members encouraged to bring a photo of loved ones who served during WWII. Adult Sunday school class begins next Sunday. 724-663-4439
First Baptist Church, 210 Front St., Midway, will hold a Veterans Day service and dinner at 11 a.m. All veterans will be recognized and honored and given a small token of appreciation for their service.
At Laboratory Presbyterian Church, 23 Manse St., Washington, Sunday worship service and Veterans Honor Sunday with slide show begins at 10:30 a.m.
Rogersville United Methodist Church will hold a service for Veterans Day at 11 a.m. There will be a special message and music presented by pastor Cynthia Deter at 102 Church St. All veterans are invited to attend and will be recognized for their service, with a luncheon to follow. Wednesday
Harvey’s-Aleppo Grange Hall in Graysville will honor veterans of any branch of the armed forces with an appreciation evening. Veterans in attendance will be presented with a certificate. The program will be held at 7 p.m. State Rep. Pam Snyder and other dignitaries will be present. All service members are encouraged to attend and advanced notice is appreciated.
