Knights of Columbus holding essay contest
All Catholic students in eighth through 12th grade in public, private and parochial schools are invited to participate in the 2017 Knights of Columbus Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest.
Students are encouraged to write a 500- to 750-word typed essay on the theme “Going to the Peripheries.” Deadline for essay submissions is Oct. 25. The essays will be judged by Knights of Columbus Council 3440 Oct. 28 in Burgettstown.
“Going to the Peripheries” is inspired by Pope Francis’ repeated comments that “… we must go to the periphery. That’s what God does.”
So what are the peripheries? They are the margins, the edge. More precisely, they are the people who are marginalized: the poor, the refugees, the homeless, the forsaken.
Essay must be typed. Students are instructed to discuss the role of the Catholic church “Going to the Peripheries” and then select one of the following ideas to complete their essays:
• Describe the work of one widely known current Catholic who went to the periphery.
• Describe the work of one widely known historical Catholic who went to the periphery.
• Describe the work of one person in their lives who helps alleviate human suffering.
All contestants at the council level will be recognized for their participation in the contest. Participants are required to furnish written parental consent.
