James Sulkowski, a local artist who is nationally renowned and listed in “Who’s Who in American Art” has been supporting the Washington County Unit of the American Cancer Society for 25 years. He recently approached the organization about donating an original painting to the annual Dinner Dance, to be held Saturday in the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe, so that he could continue his tradition of supporting the mission of the ACS.

The decision was made to paint the Main Pavilion at Washington Park for this project.

The historic pavilion was built in 1907. For more than 100 years, it has been used by the community to celebrate weddings, anniversaries, family reunions, class reunions, birthdays and family picnics. In more recent years, the pavilion has become a place of celebration for the entire Washington community as host to musical events, block parties, scouting activities, sport team parties, fundraising events and theater productions. The Rotary Club of Washington and the City of Washington are partnering to renovate this architectural gem.

Sulkowski’s rendition of the Main Pavilion will be auctioned off at the 22nd Annual Dinner Dance, and bids are being taken now for the original oil painting, which will be signed and framed by the artist. All proceeds will benefit the programs of research, patient service, education and advocacy of the American Cancer Society.

Sulkowski began his support of the ACS in 1996 when he painted the iconic Octagonal Barn for use on the organization’s holiday card. He has since painted many local historic landmarks, including the Miller Farm, the Century Inn, Scenery Hill, the Woodruff Farm, the Day Bridge and many other Washington County sites.
