Five Fort Cherry High School students recently completed a 19-foot-wide and 10-foot-tall mural for Spanish teacher Victoria Smith.
“Around the beginning of October, I got in contact with our high school art teacher, Jeff Delach, to ask if his senior art students would be interested in painting in my classroom,” Smith smith. “My white walls were dull and didn’t reflect well the vibrant environment of Latin American countries. In Latin American countries, wall art is common and painted by the locals who live in the area.”
Delach took on the challenge and created a senior art project for students Abigayle Goodwin, Nicole Stewart, Cole Miller, Matthew Weinman and Nathanael Higham.
“When the students created their sketch and presented it to me, I was floored by the size of what they had planned,” Smith said. “I had thought they were going to do a few flowers and maybe a sugar skull here and there, but senior art student, Nate Higham said, ‘No way. We’re doing the whole wall.'”
Upon completion, photographer Steven Pascoe took photos of the students and their creation.
“The dedication and time these five students devoted to this project was unlike anything I had ever seen. They came during the designated time of their art class, study halls, and even during lunch to work on this mural. Their passion was infectious and I could not have asked for more,” White said. “It is evident that these students have a bright future ahead of them.”
