Exercise physiologist and personal trainer Kortlyn Carr graduated from Waynesburg University with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. While a student at Waynesburg, she played on the women’s basketball and lacrosse teams. This is Carr’s first time coaching a Biggest Winner team, and she’s eager to evaluate the members and get started on their program. We asked her about her strategy for the team’s success.

Q. How often will the teams meet with you, and what will they do on Day 1?

A. The team will meet at the wellness center bright and early four mornings a week. The first day will be a weigh-in, baseline and fitness testing. I want them to be comfortable not only with me but with each other. Get through those measurements, do a little ice breaking and make everyone feel like a team.

Q. What is your fitness plan for the team, and will everyone do the same exercises?

A. We’ll try and do similar exercises but modify them for everyone at different skill levels. They’re all going to hit the same muscle group -That’s my goal. Even if it’s a different movement, it’s the same muscle group.

Q. What type of exercise will the team members be doing?

A. I use a circuit-style workout that includes strength training that also increases your heart rate. That’s the best method to lose weight because your heart rate is up while you’re working muscles, so everything is engaged and the body gets a bit of everything at the same time.

Q. This is your first time coaching a BW team. Are you excited?

A. I’m looking forward to coaching the team and to helping the members maintain the results they achieve. At the end of the day, when we’re done with the program, hopefully they’ve got friends and a community, and hopefully it’s easy for them to get back in here and continue.
