Wheeling into Wheeling for college credits can be an affordable endeavor for students from Washington and Greene counties.

Beginning this fall, Wheeling Jesuit University will offer reduced tuition to full-time students who commute from 12 counties in the tri-state, including Greene and Washington. Students from those areas will be eligible for the Father Clifford Lewis S.J. Scholars Program, which limits tuition to $8,250 per year.

University president Debra Townsley said in a statement: “The Lewis Scholars Program is another intentional way that our university is providing access to West Virginia’s top-rated university to local students. Thanks to our new commuter rate, aspiring students in this region have an opportunity to make their college selection based on academic excellence rather than cost.”

The program will be available to commuting students from those Pennsylvania counties plus the West Virginia counties of Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio and Wetzel; and Belmont, Guernsey, Harrison, Jefferson and Monroe in Ohio.

Program participants must take 12 to 16 credit hours per semester, maintain good academic standing and perform seven hours of service per semester through the university’s Service for Social Action Center.
