The Washington Jazz Society has awarded two $1,000 scholarships. Olivia Nixon, a student at West Virginia University and graduate of Canon-McMillan High School, is studying music education. She is a jazz trombonist, substitute with the River City Brass Band and the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra. Leighton Smith is also a graduate of Canon-McMillan and will be a freshman this fall at Slippery Rock University, majoring in music education and music performance.
