AI among topics at IU1’s annual in-service session
California – Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1) convened its educators, administrators, and staff Tuesday at PennWest California for its annual In-Service General Session, an event dedicated to professional growth, educational innovation, and community leadership. The university hosted the day’s gathering, which brought together regional leaders to set a visionary tone for the upcoming school year.
The morning opened with addresses from members of IU1 administration, Anthony Mauro, Associate Vice President for University Development at PennWest California, and Dr. Mark Leidy, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Association of Intermediate Units (PAIU).
The organization also celebrated staff achievements during the annual in-service awards presentation.
Highlighting the morning program was a keynote address from athlete and advocate Miles “Smiles” Taylor. Taylor shared his personal journey, underscoring the life-changing impact of special education and expressing gratitude for the educators who supported him along his path to success.
IU1 leadership, including Curriculum Supervisor Ron Gallagher, Curriculum Specialist Teresa Brown, and Supervisor of Technology Joe Lape, presented a session on artificial intelligence. The presentation explored how emerging AI technologies can be responsibly leveraged to enhance classroom learning and administrative efficiency.
