Charleroi Area School Board approves hybrid return to school plan

2 min read

Charleroi Area School Board on Tuesday approved a hybrid return-to-school plan, which will have students attend some classes in person and others online.

As an alternative, parents who feel more comfortable keeping their child at home can enroll in the district’s full-time online program.

The first day of school is scheduled for Sept. 8.

The hybrid option is one of three return-to-school models school districts are choosing from as the start of the 2020-21 school year looms, in addition to fully in-person or fully online options.

Charleroi initially planned to return to in-school classes, five days a week.

But, Superintendent Edward Zelich wrote in a letter to parents earlier this week, several factors have changed.

Among them: cases in Pennsylvania are  averaging around 1,000 per day, similar to where the state was when schools shut down in March.

Additionally, the state Department of Education and the health department issued new school opening guidelines, recommending the hybrid and full on-line options as preferred.

Schools will operate at 50% capacity, with students being divided into two groups.

Face coverings generally will be required at all times inside district facilities, except for those with health conditions or disabilities.

Parents will be required to symptom-check their child every day before sending  their child on a school bus or dropping  off at school.

Wrote Zelich, “We believe that the plans and policies put forward for the 2020-2021 school year are both comprehensive and flexible enough to provide as much normalcy and safety for our students, educators, and staff as possible.”
