Teen Outreach to host Black History Awareness event

Washington Health System Teen Outreach will host its annual Black History Awareness celebration Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The event, now in its 15th year, will feature winning essays read by the authors, and the winning videos will be aired.

Guests are invited to attend in-person, which will be limited to 10 people, or virtually. Anyone who wants to attend the event online can contact Dr. Mary Jo Podgurski, director of Tten Outreach, at podmj@healthyteens.com to request the link.

The winner for the high school essay contest is Jacyee Nixon of Washington High School, who essay was titled “My Racial Identity.” Eil Glass of Canonsburg Middle School took the top spot the middle school essay competition for his work on Emmett Till and Hank Aaron.

Tahmarion Gray of Washington won first place in the video category, and Shea Hatfield was the PowerPoint winner. 

It is the first year for the video and PowerPoint category, and Teen Outreach received nearly 30 video submissions.

Judges included adult former educators and peer educators.

Winners received a $100 gift card.
