Route 40 was closed Wednesday when a dump truck traveling east with its bed accidentally left upright by the driver struck the overpass at Knob Road in California Borough shortly after noon. Structural engineers spent time looking at the overpass to see if the bridge was safe to reopen before crews could remove the wreckage from Route 40 about a mile west of Brownsville. The driver of the dump truck, which continued down the highway without its bed before crashing into the concrete median, was not injured and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Traffic was detoured onto the nearby Mon-Fayette Expressway while Route 40 was closed.
