Holiday helpers
Thanks to Chuck Wolfe and a small army of volunteers, Christmas Day was merry and bright for Greene County residents who needed a hot meal.
Wolfe, of Graysville, continued his tradition of offering a free holiday meal served on Christmas Day at the Fraternal Order of Eagles 598 in Waynesburg.
In 2018, Wolfe started the dinner with the help of his wife, their family of nine and other volunteers. Over the years, thousands have been served, either at the Eagles or by having a meal delivered.
“Today is our biggest one yet, out of all the Christmas Day dinners we’ve done,” Wolfe said Wednesday. A total of between 2,200 and 2,300 dinners were served, with 1,900 of those being delivered, and the remainder walk-ins, dine-ins and take-out.
Dozens of volunteers – from cooks to delivery drivers – make the meal possible.
“We’re a little bit short of volunteers this year but we’re managing,” Wolfe said.
Patrons were treated to a holiday meal with all the fixins’, including ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, egg noodles, potato salad, gravy, vegetables, rolls and dessert.
This year’s dinner was in memory of David Torboli Jr., who died on Feb. 12. The Washington County man worked as a service representative at a Uniontown car dealership. His obituary asked that contributions made in his memory go toward supporting the annual dinner.
