WVU Medicine – Uniontown Hospital has notified patients that Highmark PA Medicare Advantage will not participate with the hospital and WVU Medicine physician groups in Fayette County in 2025.

In a letter to Uniontown Hospital patients enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan through Highmark, WVU Medicine said Thursday that Highmark PA and Highmark Wholecare were unable to reach an extension to their current agreement for Medicare Advantage with Uniontown Hospital.

“As a result, Uniontown and its affiliated provider groups will no longer be participating providers with Highmark PA or Highmark Wholecare Medicare Advantage in 2025,” the letter stated.

The change is limited to Highmark’s Medicare Advantage plans and doesn’t impact Uniontown Hospital’s participation with Highmark PA Commercial or Highmark Wholecare PA Medicaid products.

It does not apply to WVU Medicine services outside of Fayette County.

The hospital will continue to participate in several other Medicare Advantage products in 2025, including Aetna, United, UPMC for Life, and Humana.

Patients have from now until Dec. 7 during open enrollment to elect or switch their Medicare Advantage plan. They also will have a chance to switch plans from Jan. 1, 2025, through March 31, 2025, during Medicare Advantage open enrollment.

“Our priority at WVU Medicine Uniontown Hospital and our physicians is to provide great access to great health care to the residents of Fayette County,” said Carrie Willetts, President and CEO of Uniontown Hospital. “We care about the health-care needs of the residents of Fayette County and are committed to providing great access and great health care for them.”

Medicare Advantage provides health coverage to more than half of the nation’s older adults.

WVU Medicine advised those needing help to make enrollment changes to call 1-800 MEDICARE (633-4227) or visit https://www.medicare.gov/basics/get-started-with-medicare/get-more-coverage/joining-a-plan.

Those who have questions about the change are asked to contact a WVU Medicine financial counselor at 724-430-5766 or 724-430-5763, who can help them make a decision that is best for their specific needs.
