Community Circle Food Pantry has served residents of Washington County for more than 40 years, and director Melanie Wolfe said the need continues to grow.

“We know more than 24,000 people in Washington County face food insecurity – that’s one in nine people. One in seven children may not have enough food, and 10% of our seniors live below the poverty line,” she said.

Wolfe understands what that feels like. At one point, she used a food pantry to provide for her own family. That’s why working for the nonprofit is so important to her.

“I will fight for people who need food,” she said.

Wolfe doesn’t just know the individuals and families who come to the Community Circle, she knows what’s going with them.

“I’m a compassionate person that treats them like they are more than a number,” Wolfe said.

She also tries to dispel the stigma associated with those who come to food pantries.

“People think our clients don’t work, and that’s far from the truth. Some of my clients have three jobs and six kids and simply can’t make ends meet,” she said.

County residents can visit once per week. Milk and eggs are available while they last, and there is typically a selection of fresh produce, meat and dry goods. The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank allocates funds that allow for two trucks to deliver to Community Circle each week.

Community members also support the food pantry.

Said Wolfe, “Some do a stuff-a-truck drive every month for us and other people donate financially or drop off donations, but there’s never enough. I’m grateful the community rallies behind us and helps.”

Help during the holidays is appreciated, Wolfe said, as are monthly or quarterly donations.

“Every time we receive a donation, that food is gone quickly, and we’re back to square one,” she said.

The Community Food Pantry is open from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Thursday. After the holidays, Wolfe said there would be new evening hours on Wednesdays to accommodate those who can’t visit during the daytime.
