Corks & Kegs brings the party to the Meadows

It’s that time again-time to raise a glass to the region’s small businesses and the people who support them. Whether you say cheers, salud, prost, or cin cin, the Corks & Kegs Festival promises a fun time for all.
The event, sponsored by the Observer-Reporter, returns to the Hollywood Casino at the Meadows on Saturday and Sunday. Recognized as the largest beer and wine festival in the region, it’s expected to attract between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors from across Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland and New York.
Returning favorites
Participating again this year are Angela and John Burgess, who own the Washington Winery, the Washington Brewing Company and Burgess & Burgess Distillery.
Their line of spirits and ready-to-drink bottled cocktails will be in the tent on the racetrack at the festival. New this year are two bottled cocktails: Raspberry Vodka Tea and Peach Vodka Tea. The Burgess’s have been with the festival since its inception and are also bringing along their flagship beer-an easy-drinking Washington Lager.
“It’s not only refreshing, but pairs nicely with just about anything,” said Angela Burgess.
She will also be offering their popular Expresso Martini and releasing a new Tangerine Cordial at the festival.
“It can be enjoyed on the rocks, or in your favorite cocktail,” she said.
Making its second appearance at the festival is the Red Fox Winery.
“It’s a great event that gives smaller businesses like ours more exposure,” said owner Mike Lauderbaugh, who purchased the winery in 2016. He will be offering a variety of reds, whites, sweet, semi-sweet and dry wines. One in particular is a stand-out favorite.
“It’s called Sweet Summer Lovin’ and is a blend of strawberry and watermelon that’s very refreshing,” said Lauderbaugh.
New this year is the Red Fox Cigar Lounge-a relaxing space which will include comfortable seating and a choice of cigars.
“Guests will be able to bring their drinks in and mingle,” said Lauderbaugh.
Get your grub on
Johnny’s Seafood Shack is also making an appearance with mouthwatering lobster rolls, fish, shrimp and lobster tacos, shrimp baskets, and more.
“People love our Lil’ Haddies,” said owner Shawn Cessna. “We use our signature light batter blend over haddock,” he said, adding that while some fish and chips can be mushy, theirs promises to be crispy and flaky.
Also returning is Hermes Food Truck, named after the Greek god of trade, with a Mediterranean lineup of chicken, falafel, gyros and baklava. Classic crowd pleasers will also be offered, like Angus burgers, fries, chicken tenders, lemonade and deep-fried Oreos. Fans of his food may be interested to know that owner Nick Johnson plans to expand his fleet with a second truck which will take to the road next year.
And there’s more
In addition to food and drinks, there will be bands playing throughout the event. Appearing will be Michael Christopher, My So-Called 90s Band, Chain Reaction, Good Karma Band, Bon Journey, The Jukebox Band, and the Clintones.
“This is the most robust entertainment line-up we’ve had since the event’s inception,” said Carole DeAngelo, director of multi-market advertising and events.
Artisan craft vendors will also be present, offering a variety of one-of-a-kind gifts for those who seem to have everything.
Designated driver program
This year marks the launch of the designated driver program, sponsored by Washington Hyundai. Guests who take the pledge to drive safely will receive a Corks & Kegs gift, along with bottled water.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to ensuring everyone enjoys Corks & Kegs responsibly,” said DeAngelo.
The event is free to the public, with an extra charge to partake in the alcoholic drinks served in the tents onsite. It’s limited to age 21+. For more information, visit the festival’s website at www.corksandkegsfestival.com
