Canonsburg residents will have an opportunity to dig into the history of the borough with a unique scavenger hunt experience that kicks off on Memorial Day.

Canonsburg resident Brad Strimel, who organized the hunt, thought a scavenger hunt would be both a fun community event and an exciting tie-in with the county-wide celebrations for America’s 250 anniversary that will take place throughout the year.

Strimel said his inspiration for the event came from a smaller-scale scavenger hunt that took place in Canonsburg Town Park for America’s bicentennial in 1976, which was a “core childhood memory.”

The hunt is a team-based activity covering the Canonsburg and the Canon-McMillan area, with a $2,500 prize for the winning team, plus $250 each for the second- and third-place finishers.

Nearly 60 people are already signed up across 16 teams so far, Strimel said.

The winning team will also receive recognition during the Canonsburg July 4 parade.

Teams can be between two and four participants or a larger family household.

The first clues will be released on May 25, Memorial Day, with additional clues released regularly until the conclusion of the hunt on July 1.

The hunt utilizes the digital event platform Eventzee, where contestants will receive clues and upload photos to confirm that they successfully located the correct building, landmark or historic feature.

Strimel said about half the clues will involve identifying a noted site in the borough, while the other half will be focused on “community bonus challenges” that will encourage involvement in different fun activities.

Eventzee includes a live leaderboard that tracks team progress as they locate clues and complete historic challenges all focused on the Canonsburg area.

“I’m just hoping to create more memories for today’s generation,” Strimel said.
