Santa a big hit in Cecil
When Santa Claus made his grand entrance recently at Cecil Volunteer Fire Company No. 3 fire hall for the sixth annual Lunch with Santa, he told the crowd, “Believe it or not, right now it’s colder in Pittsburgh than the North Pole.”
He should know. He arrived on a fire truck.
Santa delighted more than 140 children of all ages, some older and some sporting “My First Christmas” shirts.
In addition to Santa’s visit, there were many table games and activities. Children could decorate their own cookies, have their faces painted and even write a letter to Santa and have it mailed to the North Pole.
The family-oriented event was sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary of Cecil VFC No. 3.
Many of the local supporters included the Cecil Parks and Recreation Department, Cecil American Legion Post 793, as well as various businesses that donated a Christmas tree, poinsettias and gift cards.
It’s a team effort that makes this event a yuletide success each year, said Ruth Bushmire, auxiliary president.
“Our VFC are our local heroes … and they are volunteers. They don’t get paid to help and save us, whether it is a fire, flooded basement, or car accident. They stop whatever they are doing and rush to our needs,” Bushmire said. “They are truly remarkable, and that is why we have such a dedicated auxiliary group who believe in our cause.”
In keeping with a tradition that was established three years ago, the auxiliary presented the firemen with a check. This year, the check was worth $10,000.
“There are over 20 women in our auxiliary and a few men. They are the hardest working people I have ever met and will do whatever needs to be done to make our events a success,” Bushmire said.
One of the children who spoke at length with Santa was Bushmire’s 9-year-old grandson, Drake, who offered Santa his perspective on the holiday season.
“I believe in Santa, and I love getting presents from him,” Drake told Santa. “But I also think Santa should have a gift left for him under the tree to show that we appreciate all he does for us.”
