Free tax preparation for seniors
Free tax return completion for 2012 is available to senior citizens 60 and older and any low-income taxpayers by appointment Feb. 4 through April 12 through AARP.
The volunteer preparer has been trained and certified by the IRS and the state Department of Revenue, and is able to complete federal and state tax returns, property tax and rent rebate forms and local wage-tax forms. Taxpayers must bring a copy of their 2011 tax returns; all of their 2012 tax documents;
original stamped 2012 property tax receipts; a voided personal check for direct deposit of refunds and rebate; and personal identification and Social Security card.
Completed returns will be filed electronically to the IRS and the state. State property tax/rent rebate and local wage returns need to be mailed.
Appointments are available at the following sites:
• Heritage Public Library, 52 Fourth St., McDonald, noon to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Feb. 6 to April 10. Call the library at 724-926-8400 and ask for Becky.
• McDonald/Cecil Senior Center, Route 50, Millers Run Road, Cecil, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb . 4 to April 11. Call 724-743-1827 daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and ask for Naomi.
• Presbyterian Senior Care Center, 880 S. Main St., Washington, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays, Feb. 8 to April 12. Call 724-250-4993 and ask for Karen.
Those who are unable to keep their appointments are asked to cancel so someone else can be scheduled.
Forms for rental income, depreciations, farms, business, amended returns from previous years and any complex returns will not be completed on site. These returns need to be completed by a paid professional.
