Monongahela Cemetery to mark anniversary
Monongahela Cemetery will celebrate its 150th anniversary this month with a series of events later this month.
• Monongahela Historical Society will unveil a plaque at 7 p.m. June 24. The plaque will designate the cemetery as a historic district. Terry Necciai will speak and Kathleen Mancinelli will give a presentation on the four seasons at the cemetery.
• At 6 p.m. June 25, the Veterans Council will rededicate the grave of Robert McGrew, a veteran of the War of 1812, with a new tombstone. At 7 p.m., Mancinelli will give a presentation on veterans buried in the cemetery.
• At 11 a.m. June 26, the office building will be dedicated in memory of Joseph U. Frye. Tony Lombardi, retired CEO of Mon Valley Hospital and longtime friend of Frye, will speak. At 7 p.m., Monongahela Ministerium will present a program.
• From 5 to 7 p.m. June 27, Charlie Talbert will conduct walking tours of the cemetery. At 7 p.m., there will be a ceremony at the grave of Joe Harrison. He created the Nittany Lion as Penn State’s mascot.
• From 2 to 8 p.m. June 28, Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic will have a special display, “Honoring Those Who Severed,” in the chapel. At 7 p.m., Too Many Tubas will perform in Fountain Square next to the cemetery office.
• From 1 to 4 p.m. p.m. June 29, a community picnic will be held at Fountain Square.
All events are free.
