Washington High School and the Prexie Performers will present original one-act plays by seniors Victoria Smith and Kristen Wilson at 7 p.m. today at Washington High School LGI.

The students wrote the plays for City Theatre’s Young Playwrights Contest during their Performing Arts Stage class.

After reading the plays and seeing a scene performed in the playwriting workshop, drama teacher Brandy LaQuatra decided to showcase them at the high school.

“Firsts,” written and directed by Smith, is a coming-of-age play that highlights the challenges it brings. Libby, 17, struggles to cope with her overbearing mother, the pressures of high school and the consequences of what comes from trying to avoid her problems. When things hit rock bottom, Libby learns who and what matters, and just how influential she is to her younger and impressionable sister, Tess.

“In the Darkness,” written and directed by Wilson, pays homage to Edgar Allen Poe and the murder-mystery genre. Just when you think you know what is going on, the end makes you retrace your steps. What are they hiding in the closet?

Tickets are $2 for students and $3 for adults.
