Twenty-eight members of the Fort Cherry, McGuffey and Trinity High School FFA chapters recently competed in the Washington County FFA Floriculture Contest held at McGuffey High School. Members were tested on a written knowledge test, flower identification, floral tool identification and designing a corsage using fall flowers. Individual winners, above, were, from left: • Matthew McDonald, who placed first. McDonald, son of James and Shari McDonald of Hickory, is a senior at Fort Cherry and a member of the H.G. Parkinson FFA Chapter. • Caitlyn McConn, who placed second. McConn, daughter of Jeff and Peggy McConn of West Alexander, is a senior at McGuffey and a member of the McGuffey FFA Chapter. • Katie Shuba, who finished third. Shuba, daughter of Kevin and Tara Shuba of Burgettstown, is a senior at Fort Cherry and a member of the H.G. Parkinson FFA Chapter. McGuffey FFA Team A won the team competition in the seven-team field. Members were given a floral shop scenario to complete floral arrangements for a Thanksgiving buffet, table centerpiece and door decoration. They were asked to make the decorations using various cut flowers and artificial flowers within a strict budget.
