WCCF awards scholarships
The Washington County Community Foundation has completed its endowed scholarship cycle for 2014, awarding 51 scholarships totaling $76,300.
Recipients are:
• Alice Boone Main Memorial Fund, $500 – Travis McCann of McGuffey High School. He plans to major in animal science at the University of Findlay.
• Arthur V. Ciervo Scholarship Fund, $500 – Stevie Nemetz of Bethlehem-Center High School. He plans to study music technology/performance at Duquesne University.
• Barry Clark Barto Scholarship Fund, $500 – Sunshine McCullough of Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School. She plans to attend Pittsburgh Technical Institute to study culinary arts.
• Black Family Scholarship Fund, $1,000 each – Morgan Corle of Avella High School, who plans to major in film/video at Penn State Erie-The Behrend College, and Katelynn Finnegan of West Greene High School, who plans to major in social work at California University of Pennsylvania.
• Buckholt Science Scholarship Fund, $500 – Darrell Briggs of McGuffey High School. He plans to attend Muskingum University to study petroleum geology.
• Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School Student Council Leadership Scholarship Fund, $500 – Maggie Stiffler, who plans to study mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh.
• Burgettstown Lions Club Scholarship Fund – Margie Stiffler and Sarah Smith, who plans to study accounting at Westminster College, each received $250. The $500 Lions Memorial Award was presented to Katrina Fleeman, who plans to study business management at West Virginia University.
• CAS/Dr. Kim Stacher Scholarship Fund, $1,000 – Elecia Smith of Ringgold High School. She plans to major in psychology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
• Chapman Family Scholarship Fund, $2,000 each – Heidi Chester of Bentworth High School, who plans to study massage therapy at Penn Commercial Business and Technical School; Maggie Sukel of Charleroi High School, who plans to attend West Penn Hospital School of Nursing; Sunshine McCullough; Angelina Simmons of Peters Township High School, who plans to attend French Pastry School to study baking and pastry arts; and Kara Wright of Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School, who plans to study nursing at the University of Pittsburgh.
• Chapman Family Scholarship Fund, $4,000 each – Cheyenne Shankle of Fort Cherry High School, who plans to major in chemical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University; Andrew Miller of Canon-McMillan High School, who plans to attend Robert Morris University to study sports management; Olivia Wagner of Jefferson-Morgan High School, who plans to study fashion merchandising at Mercyhurst University; and Cassandra Lignelli of Ringgold High School, who plans to study molecular biology at Penn State University.
• Charles Pappas Sr. Scholarship Fund, $1,500 award – Emily O’Brien of Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School, who plans to attend Chatham University to study biology.
• Clyde J. Tracanna/Washington Rotary Club Educational and Vocational Fund, $1,000 each – Alexa Kostyak of Trinity High School, who plans to study chemistry/biochemistry at Washington & Jefferson College; Darrell Briggs; and Shannon Crumrine of Washington High School, who plans to major in speech pathology/audiology at West Virginia University.
• D. Jack & Geraldine L. Gaido Memorial Scholarship Fund, $4,000 – Zien Deng of Chartiers-Houston High School, who plans to attend Allegheny College to major in physics and chemistry.
• Dave Pew Memorial Scholarship Fund, $500 – Rachael Ferraco of Peters Township High School, who plans to attend the Berklee College of Music to study vocal music performance.
• David O. and Sara F. Johnson Family Education Fund, $1,000 – Amy Russell of McGuffey High School, who plans to attend Western Michigan University to study dance.
• Dr. Paul Pipik Fund for Study in the Health Sciences, $850 – Shayne Finley of Bethlehem-Center High School. He plans to attend Seton Hill University to major in biology.
• Elizabeth Plumer Memorial Scholarship, $1,000 – Katelyn Nassar of Trinity High School. She plans to attend Grove City College to study elementary and special education.
• John & Sophie Choratch Scholarship Fund – Receiving $4,000 each were Amanda Hackinson of Ringgold High School, who plans to study animal science at Penn State University, Beaver campus; Joseph Blumer of Trinity High School, who plans to attend Slippery Rock University to study exercise science (pre-med); and Anna Seraly of Bishop Canevin High School, who plans to attend Slippery Rock University to study early childhood education. Maggie Stiffler received an award of $2,000.
• Joseph P. Femiani Memorial Scholarship, $1,000 – Casey Kirwan of Peters Township High School. She plans to attend Point Park University to major in digital design.
• Kirk C. Moninger Fund, $200 – Joseph Blumer.
• Kiwanis Club of Washington Scholarship Fund, $500 – Sunshine McCullough.
• Linda LeFever Scholarship Fund, $1,000 – Tessa Hochberg, a student at the Heinz School of Carnegie Mellon University.
• Margaret Pitek Ciervo Scholarship Fund , $500 – Erin Danko of Bethlehem-Center High School, who plans to attend Duquesne University.
• Megan J. Phillis Scholarship Fund for Academic Excellence, $500 – Jordan Tunno of Burgettstown Junior-Senior High School, who plans to attend Gannon University to become a physician’s assistant.
• Olivia Scott Scholarship Fund , $1,000 each – Forest Donahue of McGuffey High School, who plans to major in engineering, and Ryan Black of Peters Township High School, who plans to pursue an exploratory degree at the University of Pittsburgh.
• Rebecca Sarah Rogers Scholarship Fund, $1,000 – Shannon Crumrine.
• Ringgold Alumni Scholarship Fund , $250 – Victoria Vernet, who plans to study business at Seton Hill University.
• Ronald T. Miller II Scholarship Fund, $1,000 – Thomas Devine of Peters Township High School. He plans to attend the University of Dayton to study mechanical engineering.
• Ryan Johnston & Vaughn Johnston Scholarship Fund, $1,000 – Amy Russell.
• Scholarship Fund for the Arts , $500 – Andrew Rozsas of Chartiers-Houston High School. He plans to attend Duquesne University to study music/music technology.
• Sprowls College & Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund, $1,000 – Alyson Menzies of Fort Cherry High School, who plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh to study molecular biology.
• Washington Community Federal Credit Union Scholarship, $1,500 each – Trinity High School graduates Jordan Pruce, who plans to attend Cornell University to major in industrial and labor relations; Casey Attenberger, who plans to attend SUNY Brockport to study biology and psychology; and Abigail Maloy, who plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh as a pre-med major.
• Washington County Visiting Nurses’ Association Scholarship Fund, $3,000 – Nursing student Mariah Ketter, who attends Waynesburg University.
