The Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania will hold its 60th annual Orchid Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 15 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 16 at the Phipps Garden Center, 1059 Shady Ave., Pittsburgh.

The theme of this year’s show is “Orchids, the Gems of the Plant World.” Visitors will be treated to hundreds of orchids in full bloom in staged exhibits and floral arrangements. The show also will include orchid exhibits, free educational seminars, plant raffles and sales by vendors from throughout the eastern United States.

In addition to the popular Phalaenopsis, various Slipper Orchids, Miltonias, Odontoglossums, Intergenerics and Lycastes will be available, along with many other orchid genera, including mounted and miniature orchids. Growing supplies that are difficult to find locally also will be available.

The orchids and exhibits will be judged by a team of certified American Orchid Society judges.

The society also has been helping Phipps grow its Slipper Orchid collection. Members have identified missing specimens and are working to locate them. As a result, Phipps recently named the collection after one of the society’s members, Barbara Tisherman.

Each day of the show, a series of classes and lectures on growing healthy orchids will be offered in the Phipps Garden Center. Each lecture will last about 20 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes for questions.

Sessions will be held as follows:

• 11 a.m. – “Growing Orchids in the House and Under Lights,” tips and suggestions from experienced home grower Georgene Albrecht.

• Noon – “Growing Mounted Orchids,” Don Bell.

• 1 p.m. – “Native Orchids and How to Grow Them,” Amy Cignetti.

• 2 p.m. – “History of Orchids,” Nancy Kline.

• 3 p.m. – “Getting Your Orchids to Bloom,” Arlene Ricker.

• 11 a.m. – “Celebrating Your Orchids’ First Birthday,” Dave Miller.

• Noon – “Growing Orchids at Home on the Windowsill,” Demetria Marsh.

• 1 p.m. “Orchid Photography,” pointers for taking stunning photos by James Yamber.

• 2 p.m. “Orchid Taxonomy Demystified,” Tim Choltco.
