Iraq war memorial coming to McMurray
Cremation & Funeral Care, 3287 Washington Road, McMurray, will sponsor the Eyes of Freedom traveling memorial Monday through Wednesday.
The Eyes of Freedom traveling memorial shares the story of those who died from Lima Company 3/25. Lima Company was one of the hardest hit units of Marines in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 23 life-size portraits are a military tribute honoring all those who serve the United States in every branch of the armed forces.
“We are very excited to bring a wonderful experience to the Pittsburgh area and allow everyone in attendance to honor the men and women who serve in our great military,” said Mike Strahle, director of the Eyes of Freedom and a member of the Lima Company. “We invite everyone to visit us during display hours to honor all branches of service, past, present and future.”
Anita Miller, artist and creator of the exhibit, worked with Lima Company Marines to paint the tribute, a project that took her two-and-a-half years to complete.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to proudly sponsor and display these amazing paintings in our funeral home,” said Danielle Andy Belusko, owner of Cremation & Funeral Care. “We serve so many military families in the Pittsburgh area. We know everyone who sees it will be moved by this larger-than-life exhibit.”
The exhibit will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with an opening ceremony with guest speakers at 6 p.m. The exhibit also will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, at which time a closing ceremony will be held. Admission is free.
The memorial will be escorted to Cremation & Funeral Care by local, county and state police, fire crews, EMS workers, military personnel, and Patriot Guard Riders. The escort will begin at 11 a.m. at the Double Tree Hotel at 341 Racetrack Road, Meadow Lands, and arrive at Cremation & Funeral Care at 11:30.
