Elbert Drungo, player for Oilers, Bills, dies
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Elbert Drungo Jr., who played 120 games over nine seasons with the Houston Oilers and a season with Buffalo, died. He was 71.
Drungo died Saturday at home after battling cancer the past six years, his wife, Deborah, said Monday.
The Houston Oilers drafted Drungo in 1969 in the third round out of Tennessee State, and he played 107 games with the Oilers playing both tackle and guard through 1977. He spent his 10th NFL season in Buffalo, where he played 13 games in 1978.
Drungo coached at Fisk University for four years, then worked at the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department before retiring as a lieutenant. He is survived by his wife, and daughter, Mary Evelyn Drungo Pitts, and nieces and nephews.
