NEW YORK – Fox NASCAR announcer Steve Byrnes died. He was 56.

The network said he died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.

He was also a play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports 1’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races and hosted several auto racing shows on the company’s channels.

Before joining Fox, he was a pit reporter for TNN, CBS and WTBS.

A high school quarterback who led his team to a Maryland state championship, Byrnes played one season of football at James Madison before transferring to the University of Maryland.
