Brownsville plans community festival

Elsa and Anna from the award-winning Disney musical fantasy “Frozen” will appear on stage at the Brownsville Community Festival, which will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 11 and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 12.
Other featured attractions include a 9/11 memorial service, Patriots’ Day parade, Ducky Race and fireworks.
Making the animated Disney princesses come to life will be Kate Kratzenberg and Brady Collins, voice majors at Duquesne University. They will portray Queen Elsa of the Kingdom of Arendelle and Anna, respectively. The show is produced by 13th Hour Entertainment of Zelienople.
The free Elsa and Anna show will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 12 and will feature such hit tunes as “Let It Go” and “For the First Time in Forever” from the computer-animated film. A two-hour “meet and greet” with free photo opportunities will follow the performance.
The festival opens Sept. 11 with a memorial service in Snowdon Square. Speakers will be state Rep. Pam Snyder, D-50th District, and Ron Barrie, assistant chief of South Brownsville Volunteer Fire Company 1. Immediately before the service, first responders will scale crossed ladders of two fire trucks to raise the American flag. The service will end with a dance tribute by the Amber Terretta Dance Co. at 5:45 p.m. and a medley of patriotic songs by the Bentworth Ministerium Community Choir at 6:15.
The Patriots’ Day Parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 12. A brief firefighters’ memorial service will follow the parade, and a plaque from the State Association of Boroughs will be presented to mark the borough’s 200th year of incorporation.
Other events on Sept. 12 include the Ducky Race, a fundraiser for Brownsville Area Revitalization Corp.; a two-hour concert by the Classics, a classic rock band, beginning at 5 p.m.; and fireworks, sponsored by the Greater Brownsville Area Chamber of Commerce, at dusk.
Other entertainment will include performances by students from Dee Dee’s Studio of Dance and Amber Terretta’s Dance Co.; Stars on Stage competitors from the annual talent show of Brownsville Rotary; a concert by Blended Reality, a group of local high school students; and a children’s activity area with the Rotary’s bounce house, face-painting, puppetry and sand art, sponsored by Market Street Academy & Performing Arts Center.
There also will be food, arts and crafts vendors, plus an assortment of flea market/community yard sale tables. The Charles Street Bridge will be closed Sept. 12 between Seneca and Bank streets for the flea market.
